南京大屠杀是日本侵华期间（1937年－1945年），中方在南京保卫战中失利、首都南京于1937年12月13日陷落后，日军于南京及附近地区进行的长达数月的大规模屠杀。其中的战争罪行包括掠夺、（敏感词屏蔽）、及对大量平民及战俘的屠杀；一般认为死亡人数逾30万，尽管历史学家对屠杀的规模有不同叙述。在中国，南京大屠杀是民族主义的重要关注点。在日本，公众对其认识则存有不同情绪及观点，尤其是部份极右人士，认为南京大屠杀是被夸大（如果不是捏造）并用于反对日本的外交工具，这统称“历史修正主义”及“否认主义”；在日本对南京大屠杀有“南京大虐杀”、“南京虐杀”、及“南京事件”等不同的称呼。对南京大屠杀的认识，是中日外交及人民关系中存在的问题之一。在美欧，南京大屠杀使用“Nanjing Massacre”及“Rape of Nanjing”的字眼（仅列英文为例；另，Nanjing有时也拼作Nanking），但人们对其的了解程度远不如对纳粹的种族灭绝及屠杀事件的认知。
